Lack of sleep and weight gain have been an item that has gone hand in hand for some time now. It makes sense when you think about it. After all, if you wake up totally exhausted because you didn’t sleep well, you are probably going to be craving some high calorie junk food for comfort.
There is actually a scientific reason for this and it isn’t that you are grumpy from lack of sleep which requires vast amounts of fats and sugars to fight. Instead, consider that a sleep deprived body pumps out an overabundance of a hormone called gherlin. That hormone makes you feel hungry. Now, add that to the fact that a sleepy body also produces less of the hormone leptin, which tells you that you feel full, and a case for no sleep equaling weight gain is easy to make. But, is the inverse true?
Weigh Less, Get More Zs
New research out actually confirms it; a good night’s sleep and weight loss also seem to go hand in hand. In fact, a recent John Hopkins study showed that 55 patients in the trial had an improved night of sleep by an average sleep score of 20%. This was a bonus for the researchers who were out to study first the affect of weight loss on type 2 diabetes, which all the participants had.
Weight Loss and Sleep
Losing weight is a great way to look and feel better, but it is also a way in which you can help yourself get some much needed rest. This is more than just losing some water weight though as researchers point to the loss of body fat really helping with sleep. There have even been studies conducted that show losing weight when overweight and/or obese can help with sleep apnea. Losing weight seems to be a no lose scenario when it comes to sleeping well.
The Good Double Edged Sword
With all the resent research on weight loss and sleep, it can be viewed as a very good double edged sword. Not only will losing weight help you to sleep well and feel more refreshed in the morning, but it will also help you keep from gaining weight due to sleep deprivation. So, your body will be well rested, and produce the hormones it should, and your cravings to eat all that bad stuff will be gone.
Do it With Diet and Exercise
Weight loss of any kind is good and if the research proves right it also means a better night’s sleep. But, the only sure fire way to accelerate your weight loss results is by combining both diet and exercise. One is not very effective without the other, but when combined you have the ability to drop serious weight, which will then lead you to some serious Zs. Get fit and get sleep, it really does seem to be that simple.
