Acupuncture Weight Loss Review
“The needles are usually left in place for five to 20 minutes, usually no longer than 60 minutes, and then removed. Following an acupuncture treatment, practitioners will usually reassesses the client and often give suggestions for home care. It is also typical to suggest supplemental Chinese herbs to enhance the achievement of energetic balance.”
While there are some people who have successfully used acupuncture for weight loss, I will dive into the details so you can make the decision as to whether it is right for you or not. What energy pathways in the body are used for weight loss techniques by an acupuncturist? They use certain parts your ear to manipulate and trigger points to reduce cravings that might come along. Confused? There are certain points on your ear that can help in reducing cravings and help you lose weight, therefore the acupuncturist lightly places the needles in these places. There have been studies done on why this is effective, and I will highlight them below. Can acupuncture help with weight loss? Acupuncture is not the only treatment that helps you lose weight, even though its effectiveness should not go uncharted. According to the Pacific College of Oriental Medicine,
“The effect of acupuncture on a client’s emotions also plays an important role in aiding weight loss. Acupuncture affects the neuroendocrine system by blocking harmful neurochemicals to restore the natural balance of hormones and neurotransmitter levels. The resulting release of endorphins helps to reduce stress, which in turn helps to prevent the urge to overeat.”
So with all of these moving parts together, there might just be a recipe for weight loss even though it is not a quick fix overnight treatment by any means.
Cost and Side Effects Of Acupuncture For Weightloss
What does acupuncture cost for weight loss cost? It really can vary depending on what part of the country you live in, and which clinic you visit. Typically, on average they charge you by the session and in a basic weight loss package you can be seen anywhere from 10-12 times, each costing around $75.00 per session depending on who you go to. Many times people want to know if there are any side effects associated with doing acupuncture for weight loss, and there are some minor ones. One girl named Allison wrote about her journey with acupuncture for weight loss and said her side effects were minor. Other notable side effects are muscle soreness, spasms, and emotional turbulence.
“I just had to lay there while I got pricked all over my body (which actually felt kind of good) and then lay still for another 30 minutes after the last needle was inserted. It was a dark room with relaxing music. It was a nice break!”
But things took a strange turn when the acupuncturist “hooked the needles on my stomach up to a battery that pulsed electricity into them. Now that was a weird feeling. My abs were sore the next day!”

The Science (or Lack Thereof) Behind AWL?
It is no secret that acupuncture has been around for quite some time, roughly dating back to 6,000 BCE. According to News Medical this practice originated in China.
“Earlier, instead of needles sharpened stones and long sharp bones were used around 6000 BCE for acupuncture treatment. These instruments could also have been used for simple surgical procedures like lancing an abscess etc.”
With that being said, there has been studies done that have found certain acupuncture treatments to be effective, but it might not work for everyone who tries it. The history is rich and deep with acupuncture, but not everyone wants to partake in this interesting way to hopefully lose weight. In one study done by BMJ Journals, they took 91 Korean people, 16 being males and 75 being female to test the effectiveness of acupuncture through the 5 body pathways in the ear to help with obesity. With all of these participants, none of them had received any prior diet treatments for at least 6 months. The results?
“For the 58 participants who provided data at 8 weeks, significant differences in BMI, weight, and BFM were found between the treatment and control groups. Treatment groups I and II showed 6.1% and 5.7% reduction in BMI. This finding suggests that the five ear acupuncture points, generally used in Korean clinics, and the Hunger point alone treatment are both effective for treating overweight people.”
There are supposedly 5 main acupuncture points on the ear, and according to Health CMI,
“The endocrine point used in the 5 acupuncture point combination is located in the cavum concha in the intertragic notch.”
This is an important piece of information to note because it is one of the main points when doing acupuncture for weight loss. Also,

“The hunger auricular acupuncture point is located on the lower part of the tragus in the direction of the transitional fold near the facial skin. The hunger point can be used to up-regulate or downregulate sensations of hunger. It is used for issues of anorexia, bulimia, and digestive disturbances.”
Why Choose Acupuncture?
You might be wondering why anyone would choose this alternative method for weight loss, and the answer is simple: It’s alternative. Not everyone likes to take in powerful diet pills, go on yoyo diets, or even invest money to go see a doctor week after week. Do you blame them? Not everyone’s weight loss journey is the same, so looking into an alternative route is not always a bad idea. The concept of creating positive energy to flow through the body might benefit someone who has been feeling down and out about dieting. Although, this way is not the cheapest route, it might just help you kick start your weight loss. Obesity has been said to disrupt the flow of energy to the major organs like the kidneys, spleen, liver, and digestive system. The disruptions have a negative impact on fat accumulation and water retention in the body. That being said, acupuncture can help better control your hunger, improve your circulation, and reduce your overall stress and anxiety, which also has an impact on weight gain in an individual. When you choose acupuncture, the ear is not the only place they will insert the tiny needles. If you have a problem overeating, you might even have some needles inserted near your mouth region. The stomach region is also used to improve your quality of snacking, or to break bad snacking habits altogether. Other popular places are your kidney’s, which helps get rid of unnecessary water retention throughout the body. The spleen is used for an addiction to sweets and sugary foods, and the lungs are used to treat addictions to foods in general. This is a very basic overview of where they could insert the needles, but it is nonetheless an option if you decide to choose acupuncture for weight loss.back to menu ↑

The Bottom Line: Is AWL Worth A Try?
Yes. There really is no bodily risks to trying this method of weight loss out, and there have been people that have seen success going this route. It is not the most popular method due to its high price point, and also way it’s administered. Many people really do not like needles, and they cannot get to the point where they are okay letting someone prick them hundreds of times all to lose weight. Overall, the studies and history around acupuncture therapy, not only for weight loss but for a variety of other reasons, has been said to help individuals reach their goals slowly but surely. There is no harm in it at all, and if anything, the only risk involved is the cost associated with the practice.
