Benefiber Healthy Shape Ingredients
The ingredient list is short and sweet: wheat dextrin. The Science (or Lack Thereof) Behind Benefiber Healthy Shape
Wheat dextrin is a soluble fiber supplement, and as such may help increase the absorption of micronutrients and regulate your digestive system. … wheat dextrin may help you better control your blood sugar, at least in part due to slowing the emptying of the stomach and the release of sugars into your bloodstream after you eat.
Fiber supplements are important when looking to lose weight because fiber keeps you full for longer periods of time without a lot of extra calories. On the main website, there is a very short ingredient list that says the only active ingredient is Wheat Dextrin. But regular Benefiber has Wheat Dextrin as its only ingredient, too. So what’s the difference? According to LiveStrong.com,
Both products contain wheat dextrin as the source of fiber. The main difference between the two supplements is serving size, and therefore the amount of fiber and calories. The standard Benefiber serving size is 2 teaspoons, which contain 15 calories and 3 grams of fiber. Healthy Shape contains 30 calories and 5 grams of fiber in 1 rounded tablespoon of the product.
There are no studies done on the website as to why Wheat Dextrin is a magical ingredient, but there is information around other sources. There are some conflicting studies done on the effectiveness of Wheat Dextrin and weight loss, however. One study published in the 2015 Nutrition Today stated
A recent comprehensive review of available clinical data concluded that resistant starch (soluble, non viscous, fermentable; eg, wheat dextrin) had no significant effect on satiety or weight loss at physiologic doses. A yearlong study in 97 adolescents has been quoted as demonstrating weight loss for a “prebiotic” fiber supplement (soluble, non viscous, fermentable), but a closer look at the data shows that the prebiotic fiber group (8 g/d) was not different from baseline for body mass index.
Another meta-study, published in 2009 in the Journal of International Medicine, confirms that wheat dextrin is certainly no magic pill for weight loss. But Benefiber never claims that; and the study does reveal other health benefits.
The evidence suggests that soluble fibers help to regulate the digestive system, may increase micronutrient absorption, stabilize blood glucose and lower serum lipids, may prevent several gastrointestinal disorders, and have an accepted role in the prevention of cardiovascular disease. It is concluded that supplementation with soluble fibers (e.g. wheat dextrin) may be useful in individuals at risk of a lower than recommended dietary fiber intake. back to menu ↑
Word On The Street About Benefiber Healthy Shape
Because this product is widely sold all around the country, there are plenty of sources for customer feedback. Many individuals take this product daily for a plethora of reasons, including to help them feel full between meals in relation to weight loss. On Amazon.com, 27 reviews gave it 4.2 out of 5 stars. 75 reviews on Walmart.com rate it the same. “Joni” (2017, 5 stars) said, “It dissolves quickly and is very filling. I am no longer hunger after drinking this.” “Marks” (2016, 5 stars) said, “Great product. Really curbs my hunger. I add it to my morning coffee or tea and it blends in quite nicely with no thickness. Easy way to add fiber to my diet!” “whosthemom” (Walmart, 2017, 5 stars) gives a great summary of Benefiber Healthy Shape in the context of weight loss:
… I began using it everyday and have to say I’m extremely pleased. … I meant I have to admit, that during the holidays I wasn’t a very good eater. Having said that the added use of Benefiber Healthy Shape helped keep the pipes flowing. After that, I needed to reduce a few pounds of that extra holiday weight. I added Benefiber in the morning to help keep my tummy full. It did a great job of keeping me from snacking and I was able to make my weight goal. Now let’s be real ladies, Benefiber isn’t going to make you lose the weight, that’s up to you. However, if you need a little assistance, then Benefiber will definitely help you with the job. (emphasis added)
To the contrary, “EW” (2016, 2 stars) said, “I didn’t quite get the fullness feeling that they talk about in the other reviews. It doesn’t have a bad taste, but you do taste something off in your water.” “Michael Beloved” (2015, 3 stars) also rated middle-of-the-road:
I used this product more to assist me with being regular given the level of fiber in this product. It did assist with that however I can’t say that I noticed a suppressant of my appetite. I have been eating smaller healthier meals prior to beginning this product so it could be possible that I am eating a little less with each meal. I am not skipping any meals because I feel full though.
Again, Benefiber Healthy Shape does not claim to be a “magic pill” for weight loss. So it makes sense there are no reviews touting it as such. It is fiber—that simple. It can help you feel full between meals. You still have to eat the right things and get off the sofa. The only side effects reported were some mild gastrointestinal issues, but most fiber supplements have those same issues, and they all offer the same advice: start slow. Let your body adjust to the increased fiber. Every supplement affects every individual differently. Gender, age, sometimes race, pre-existing medical conditions, and individual body chemistry—as unique as a fingerprint—can affect how a supplement works on you. That’s why supplements always add that “individual results may vary” disclaimer, and it’s why reviews for a drug or supplement can be all over the spectrum. Only you and your doctor can figure out how it works for you, so always be forthcoming and transparent with your doctor about side effects you experience, as well as if the substance doesn’t seem to be doing anything for you.back to menu ↑
