Clen, otherwise known as Clenbuterol or the size zero pill, is a weight loss drug that has made headlines for fat loss. What is Clen? First of all, its effectiveness has only been tested on animals, as it was originally made for treating asthma and bronchial issues. In many countries today, however, it is mainly used in horses to keep them from being slaughtered and used as a food resource. This steroid-like supplement comes from the group of drugs better known as beta-2-agonists, and it is eerily similar to other stimulant drugs out on the market today like ephedrine and amphetamines. Despite the side effects, people are still purchasing and taking this drug to try and lose body fat at an alarming rate. [1] Is it legal?   This drug is not illegal in the United States, but it is not advised by the FDA either. There is a gray area here, and it has received more negative press than positive. It is most commonly abused in the sports medicine world, where body builders and athletes are using it meticulously to trim down. Clen results can be powerful, but it will not come without side effects. According to Steroid.com,

“Beyond treating breathing disorders, Clenbuterol is commonly used as a thermogenic. In fact, you will more than likely find more Clenbuterol use in fat loss plans than anywhere else. It is a very common fat burning tool used by many anabolic steroid users. It is a long standing favorite among competitive bodybuilders and other physique athletes during contest preparation. However, it is also used by non-steroid users for its fat loss properties.” [2]

Clen Claims

According to Dr. McKeever,

“Clenbuterol was found to have a repartitioning effect. With the calories you take in, this drug will make it so that those go toward muscle rather than fat. It’ll boost the metabolic rate, so you’ll burn fat and lay down more muscle. That’s what a repartitioning agent does.” [3]

This is why Clen appeals to so many people looking to lose fat and get leaner quickly.   According to Dynamic Sports Nutrition,

“Clen® has been formulated with beta-2 receptor stimulation in mind and is designed to promote a simultaneously thermogenic and lipolysis effect. This action provides a significant metabolic boost and creates an internal environment that is perfect for fat loss. Not only does Clen® effectively help burn stubborn body fat, it can significantly reduce and help you control your hunger and cravings. A stronger and more powerful metabolism with more appetite control means one thing – Clen® will help you reach the lean physique you crave!” [4]

“Surprisingly to some, Clen® is also a great tool for those who are looking to build up muscle mass or who are in what’s commonly known as a “bulking phase.” Gaining too much body fat is a common problem when bulking, but Clen® will help you control the unwanted fat gain so that your gains are of a higher quality. Athletes, be it high performance or endurance, will find Clen® to be invaluable as it has been designed to promote cardiovascular endurance and stamina, which means you will breath easier. All athletes from all walks of life will also find Clen® provides a significant boost of energy, which is always welcomed when training.”  Clen® was scientifically formulated to help: Rapidly Remove Body Fat, Efficiently Burn Fat Calories, Stimulate Fat Cells to Enhance the Breakdown of Triglycerides, Improve Stamina and Endurance, Safely and Substantially Reduce Appetite.”

The Science (or Lack Thereof) Behind Clen

Clen has been said to help people bulk up without gaining all of the fat, which is why it is popular in the bodybuilding arena. Other claims are made about it being great for boosting stamina and endurance, burning body fat, and giving your metabolism a boost, among a whole host of other things. The claims seem strong and confident, but why are these things promised to the user? Interestingly enough, this supplement does not come without risk and side effects. According to a study,

“If you go back a couple of decades when Clenbuterol was being looked at as a way to put on more muscle mass and less fat in livestock, there were problems. In Europe, Clenbuterol was banned because people got sick after eating animals fed Clenbuterol. And the producers that were using Clenbuterol didn’t realize it stayed in the meat for a long time and could be passed on to people who ate it.” [7]

According to Illicit Drug Research,

“Clenbuterol after ingestion is readily absorbed (70-80 percent) and remains in the body for 25-40 hours. Due to its long life, the positive effects of Clenbuterol are prolonged. This drug is quickly absorbed in less than 15-20 minutes after oral administration with a bioavailability of 83 percent. Clenbuterol is metabolized in the liver and is primarily excreted in the urine and a small percentage of this drug (<5 percent) is excreted in the feces. The lung, liver, and left ventricle contains the highest concentrations of this drug.” [8]

This makes sense as to why it can help breathing and improve stamina in those who choose to take it. Because it also raises your body temperature, it has the ability to be a thermogenic drug, which in return helps burn calories and eventually fat.   When you are on a Clen cycle or a Clen and 13 cycle, it is important to know that even though its main purpose is to burn fat and put on muscle, it will also come with side effects. Common side effects are: dizziness, heart palpitations, anxiety, abnormal sweating, overheating, blood pressure problems, and heart problems. [9] Be aware that it is sold under different names such as,

“Dilaterol, Spiropent, and Ventipulmin, but most people just refer to it as “clen” or “bute.”” [10]

Sure, it has its perks for fat loss, therefore increasing your chance for overall weight loss, but it can be abused. There was a specific study done by NCBI about bodybuilders and the sudden uptick in abuse with the drug clenbuterol. Misuse for this drug was found in 11 of the 13 users they studied.   According to the study done by NCBI,

“There is an increasing use of the Internet for illicit drug use for bodybuilding and weight loss purposes. These patients may not present as the stereotype of illicit drug abusers, but as healthy athletic low-risk patients. Clinical effects persisted greater than 24 hours with evidence of myocardial injury in 2 patients. Clenbuterol is increasingly being abused within the bodybuilding subculture. These cases illustrate the hidden dangers of clenbuterol abuse among bodybuilders and fitness enthusiasts.” [11]

Why is this? Because it works the way they say it works, it just won’t come without side effects.

Word On The Street About Clen

There is no doubt that this product works like they say, which is why it has gotten a lot of press both good and bad in the weight loss and bodybuilding world. If you go to most bodybuilding forms you will see success from this drug, but it is not the safest route to go to lose weight. People rant and rave about it making them leaner, but it is not even approved by the FDA. Most people take this weight loss drug for one of two reasons: to lean up and burn fat, and to increase athletic performance. It is a banned substance for competition athletes such as college, cyclists, football, etc.

The Bottom Line: Is Clen Worth A Try?

Definitely Not.  This drug is abused 99% of the time, and it comes with very unpleasant side effects. It is a banned supplement in the sports world for good reason, even though it is proven to help with endurance and loss of fat. Sadly, many people will still take this drug out of desperate attempts to get leaner and lose the weight they want to lose. It will come with a cost, and a health price which could land you in the hospital. If you overdose on Clen, you will be calling the poison control hotline, and many times they have to give you charcoal at the hospital to clear your stomach of the toxins. This is no user friendly supplement, and has gotten a lot of bad press for good reason. Do yourself a favor and stay away from Clen, and do not fall into the temptation to become leaner from this drug.
