LifeExtension DHEA Review

LifeExtension DHEA Review
Reading Time: 4 minutesDehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) is a hormone that comes from the adrenal gland. It is also made in the brain. DHEA leads to the production of androgens and estrogens (male and female sex hormones). DHEA levels in the body begin to decrease after age 30. Levels decrease more quickly in women. Lower DHEA levels are found in people with hormonal disorders, HIV/AIDS, Alzheimer’s disease, heart disease, depression, diabetes, inflammation, immune disorders, and osteoporosis. Corticosteroids, birth control taken by mouth, and agents that treat psychiatric disorders may reduce DHEA levels. –Mayo Clinic [1]

Many times people associate DHEA with bodybuilders because the supplement has the capability to boost the production of growth hormones, which results in muscle growth. There are warnings associated with its use, however, and we’ll discuss those below.

LifeExtension offers a DHEA supplement in 100mg capsule form. One 60-serving bottle will cost $15.00-$25.00, depending on where you purchase it. The company is based out of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and their contact information is 1-888-895-4771.

LifeExtension DHEA Claims [2]

  • Their DHEA supplement will help you fight against age-related weight gain.
  • “The 7-Keto® DHEA form has been shown to safely increase thermogenesis, and help maintain healthy body weight and body fat when combined with a diet and exercise program.”
  • The company has been researching DHEA for over 30 years, their formula and usage instructions specially drafted to provide optimal, safe dosing. The dosage requirements are to take one capsule in the morning when you wake up, and then one more just before you eat lunch.

Clear warnings to both men and women are posted on the website as well:

Women should consider estrogen and testosterone testing when they take their DHEA blood test in order to evaluate DHEA’s effect on their blood levels of these hormones. [2]

Before attempting to restore DHEA to youthful levels, men should know their serum PSA (prostate specific antigen) level. Men with prostate cancer or severe benign prostate disease are advised to avoid DHEA, since it can be converted into testosterone (and estrogen). [2]

The Science (or Lack Thereof) Behind LifeExtension DHEA [3] [2]

The Mayo Clinic has a lot of good to say about DHEA in general, though they are equally clear about warnings and about the fact that any DHEA supplement should always be taken under the care of a doctor.

They give A-grades (Strong scientific evidence for this use) to it for:

  • improving bone density
  • treating depression
  • boosting metabolism to aid in weight loss (they specifically mention 7-Keto)

In the last two cases they do state that more long-term research is needed.

B-grades indicate good scientific evidence for this use. DHEA gets a B in treating lupus—an autoimmune disorder affecting the skin and organs. It also gets a B in treating erectile dysfunction (ED, impotence) and other sexual issues. Research is promising, but more studies are needed.

One interesting note: while DHEA is used by bodybuilders to increase muscle growth, Mayo gives it a D (Fair scientific evidence against this use) in terms of improving muscle strength. Meaning you’ll probably have to do that part the old-fashioned way, with hard work and patience.

Life Extension itself offers a lot of credible evidence on their product website. In fact, there’s more science than hype offered overall, which is impressive in this day of buzzwords and clickbait.

Since 1981, several thousand studies have been published on DHEA’s various benefits, including immunomodulatory properties as well as positive effects on mood, quality of life, and body composition. It has been proposed that restoring the circulating levels of DHEA to those found in young people may improve well-being and sexual function. [2]

Of course, there’s also this statement, which should probably be taken with a grain of salt until you’ve had a chat with your doctor:

Because of the overwhelming evidence connecting low levels of DHEA to problems associated with aging, Life Extension suggests that all people over age 40 begin DHEA therapy. [2]

As with any “heavy-duty” supplement, DHEA has a laundry list of warnings as well. The Mayo Clinic site cautions the following groups of people about taking it: hormone-sensitive conditions; on medications of any kind; low blood pressure or meds for lowering blood pressure; women who have chronic PMS; high-risk groups for prostate, liver, breast, and ovarian cancers; and several others. (full list here) [4]

It cannot be stressed enough that DHEA should always be taken under the strict supervision of a qualified health care provider.

NOTE: DHEA is on the NCAA’s banned substance list, so be aware if you’re an athlete. [6]

Word On The Street About LifeExtension DHEA

The Amazon.com sales page for LifeExtension DHEA only has 41 reviews, but 91 percent of them are 4- or 5-star. Both men and women have reviewed this specific brand for effectiveness, and overwhelmingly they like it. It’s not for everyone though, so do your research and clear it with your doctor if you are interested in trying it out. Many people noted their energy levels felt higher and their joints felt healthier, which seems to coincide with the Mayo Clinic’s grades for depression and bone density.

“joseph” said, “I really noticed a difference with this brand. Also I was told to get a higher potency to get and feel the effect and I did. My mood improved and I also noticed a strength increase. I’m 45 and feeling great.” [5]

“RJ72” said, “This is the first review I have ever written, but I couldn’t resist. I had blood serum test done before taking this product. My level came back 0.8 on a reference range of 1.8-14.0, which is way below the minimum. After 60 days on this product at 100mg per day, I was retested and my DHEA level was 15!” [5]

“Freddie g” praised it as well: “I’m a huge believer!!! After taking this for only 4 days I can tell a significant difference in my moods, my energy and my drive ! I want to stay busy all the time and situations that normally got me down or upset are no long affecting me the same.” [5]

The Bottom Line

Is LifeExtension DHEA supplement worth a try?

Worth a Try (with strict supervision).DHEA has shown a lot of positive results, both in terms of the science and the reviews. Again, there are extensive warnings about its use, and it should always be taken under the strict supervision of a qualified health care provider—but it’s good news. LifeExtension has a long-standing reputation for quality and credibility in all their products, and the fact their sales pitch is far more science and logic than hype adds to that reputable nature. Always follow your health care provider’s instructions to the letter as regards dosage, and report any adverse effects immediately to prevent any possible health hazards.
