The Grapefruit Diet also known as the “Hollywood Diet” has been around since the 1930’s. The main premise behind the diet states that you can lose up to 10 pounds in only 12 days time which seems rather abrupt.* As the name implies, the Grapefruit Diet is based largely on a diet that consists of lots and lots of grapefruit. While on the Grapefruit Diet participants are allowed to eat until they are full, but must follow meal plans to the letter in order for the weight loss effect to kick in. The idea is that the grapefruits, in conjunction with the other foods eaten while on the Grapefruit Diet, will come together to create a fat burning effect in the body and rapid weight loss will then ensue. The Grapefruit Diet allows for only a limited amount of caffeine each day and cuts out all sugars and starches. Dieters are not allowed to eat in between meals but are encouraged to eat until they feel “stuffed” during meal time.

It is a high protein diet which demands that you consume some form of grapefruit at every meal to ensure fat burn occurs. There are many different forms of this diet, but almost all of the “sample menu plans” will consist of under 1,000 calories per day which will leave you borderline “hangry” all day long.

Do Dieters Lose Weight on the Grapefruit Diet?

The Grapefruit Diet is a high protein, low carbohydrate diet with grapefruits added. So, just like other low carb diets, the Grapefruit Diet will likely give great short term results as it is meant to do. However, the weight loss results that are enjoyed will be short lived as dieters who partake in the 12 days of the Grapefruit Diet almost always return to their normal eating habits once that time is up. So, in a matter of days all the weight that might have been lost is then put right back on and in some cases a couple extra pounds are added. Furthermore, the rapid weight loss that the Grapefruit Diet touts is not safe weight loss. It is far better to find a diet that allows you to lose weight over time in a more natural way than it is to attempt to lose too much weight too quickly.

The amount of sugar being consumed from the Grapefruit is also high, and the acidity level has been said to do a number on the enamel of your teeth long term! Be careful about this one if you are planning on going to the dentist after you try this diet out. Many dieters claim that there is a special enzyme in grapefruits which then allows the food eaten before the grapefruit consumption to be burned off more quickly. Sadly, this fun fact has not been proven or backed up by science so do not run with it.

Is The Grapefruit Diet Easy To Follow?

If you like the bitter taste of a lot of grapefruits and don’t mind being restricted to basically no carbohydrates then the Grapefruit Diet is easy to follow. However, for the majority of those out there, the diet is too restrictive in nature to follow past 12 days time. Once the 12-days is over, you will have to try and implement healthy habits so that the weight you just worked so hard to get off, stays off. There is no point in participating in a fad diet, just to gain all of the weight back and start at square one. Why would anyone want to put themselves through the torture?
Any diet that restricts what you can eat and cuts out whole groups of foods is a hard one to follow. In no time at all your cravings will be hitting you hard and if you lack self control then you will likely not make it to the end of the 12 days.

Conclusion

The Grapefruit Diet is a trendy diet and the results that are promised sound great. However, even if you are able to lose the 10 pounds in the 12 days you won’t be able to do so properly and you won’t be able to keep it off in the long run. Taking bits and pieces from this diet and incorporating into your everyday life may be the smarter way to go about things, and it will be more satisfying too when you start losing pounds without being starving all day long. Also, using this diet to kickstart weight loss in preparation for starting a program will longterm results could serve you well in the future. Be mindful though, that grapefruit in any form has been said to interfere with certain medications like Allegra, Zoco, Liptitor, Blood Pressure Medication, anti-anxiety medication, organ medication and so forth. Always check with your doctor before going on a diet like this one.
