Like so many diets that are out on the market today, the Scarsdale Diet was started by a doctor for his patients and then made the program into a book and sold it globally. The doctor responsible for the Scarsdale Diet is Herman Tarnower. Dr. Tarnower uses a blend of proteins, carbohydrates, and fats that he says is unique to his diet to help participants lose weight. In fact, the claims of weight loss are nothing short of miraculous. According to the diet plan, if you follow the strict 43% protein, 22.5% fat, and 34.5% carbohydrate mix Dr. Tarnower claims you can lose 20 pound in just two weeks as your body will go into the state of ketosis and burn fat faster.* The diet is a strict one and it is emphasized that it must be followed precisely. For the first two weeks participants are only allowed 1,000 calories per day and this gets ramped up a bit after the initial two week phase. The focus os this diet is to eat high protein, low carbs, and reduced fat to help you attain your weight loss goals.

Dieters tend to show their weight loss success mostly upfront with the Scarsdale Diet. This is likely because of the restriction of calories that the diet has in place. However, the claims of 20 pound in two weeks is debatable and if it is achievable there really isn’t any probable way that it could be safe weight loss or weight loss that could be sustained once any level of normalcy returns to the dieter’s eating habits.

Joan* said, “No, I do not love this diet. It is onerous and hard to stick with — that’s why it gets 4 stars instead of 5. Does it produce amazing results? Absolutely YES. It is the ONLY DIET I have found that melts belly fat.”

Ann* said similar to Joan, “Tough to follow because of the small list of diet items for eating. it does have a few different diets so you can experiment. I lost 25 lbs. in 6 weeks. The food is easy to prepare. Requires complete shopping for different items. No sugar, no white flour.”

Is the Scarsdale Diet Easy to Follow?

Scarsdale Diet hard diet to followThe Scarsdale Diet would be a hard diet to follow in any case just because of the calorie restrictions. The Scarsdale Diet seems to put a lot of emphasis on eating in such a way that your body goes into the state of ketosis. So, concentrating on the foods the Scarsdale Diet calls for means there will be plenty of cravings to go along with each passing day. That might make this diet a hard one to follow if you have a week resolve. Even people who loved this diet program, and felt they like they got used to it overtime said it was still hard to follow. It may produce short term results for you, but they are not going to come easy that is for sure!

Conclusion

The Scarsdale Diet has been around for some time now, but the claims are still the same and still sound outlandish. The Scarsdale Diet claims to be the only diet that focuses the right mix of proteins, carbohydrates, and fats that together induce ketosis, but other high protein diets such as the Atkins Diet claim the same thing. The diet is also one that can cost you. The book alone is almost $30 and that has nothing to do with the food you will consume. Whenever you consume larger amounts of proteins you will be spending large amounts of money on it as that means a lot of beef, chicken, and so on. But mostly, the diet just doesn’t seem like a healthy one. If you could lose 20 pounds in only two weeks how safe can that actually be? While weight loss is the overall goal of anyone looking for the right diet, that goal should also include losing that weight in the proper manner to maintain overall health, which is a point the Scarsdale Diet seems to be missing overall.

This diet is the holy grail of weight loss, it is hard to stick with especially at first but its quick and easy to prepare and pack if you are busy and it works faster than any diet I’ve ever seen and you are not starving, its only insanely strict for 2 weeks at a time I am a woman and almost 30 and if I stick to it like glue I have lost 17 lbs in 2 weeks consistently I’ve used this diet ever since I was a teenager when I need to trim down, my mother before me used this diet and lost 70 lbs in 5 months, I like to alternate with the Atkins diet if I’m going to be on it for more than a couple of months when I can’t take it anymore and I really need some fat I take my 2 weeks off and go to Atkins induction for 2 weeks I don’t lose much for that 2 weeks but it gives me a break from low fat, and I usually schedule 1 cheat day about once a month premeditated if you just go off the diet on a whim you most likely won’t go back on it and 1 cheat day becomes 2, becomes 3, becomes a year, plan your cheat days in advance I took 1 for my birthday, thanksgiving, Christmas, you get the picture and say no to holiday leftovers. I’ve tried just about every diet there is scarsdale works if you have the willpower to stick with it, and no its not easy but I haven’t come across a diet yet that is easy, if it were easy no one would be fat

I did this diet in 2002, after coming out of nursing school with a lot of excess weight. I did it for 2 weeks (which were 2 of the hardest weeks of my life) and lost exactly 20 lbs! After going off the diet, I only gained back 2, which I maintained until having my first child in 2004. The diet DOES work, it just takes ENORMOUS will power……which is why I have never successfully done it again. It is much easier when you are single and live alone. Having 4 children makes it difficult to control your environment, and thus temptation.

I have tried numerous diets, including Nutri-System, Jenny, Seattle Sutton, and pills etc. The Scarsdale Diet works for me, plain and simple. The cost is cheaper then anything I’ve tried. It also does not require special meals to complicate the cooks life. It teaches you how to adjust and to keep you on the straight and arrow.
