The Specific Carbohydrate Diet was created by Elaine Gottschall after her daughter beat Ulcerative Colitis using a very specific diet. This was all brought to light in her book titled, Breaking the Vicious Cycle, and thus the Specific Carbohydrate Diet was born.

Gottschall contends that by eliminating sucrose, lactose, and grain, the body is better able to ward off a number of ailments and diseases including Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Crohn’s Disease, Ulcerative Colitis, Celiac disease, and Candidiasis. Therefore, the Specific Carbohydrate Diet focuses on taking in only the types of carbohydrates that fuel the body and eliminating the kinds that remain undigested. As a bonus, the Specific Carbohydrate Diet says weight loss will naturally occur.*

Do Dieters Lose Weight On The Specific Carbohydrate Diet?

Dieters using the Specific Carbohydrate Diet will most certainly lose weight in the short term. This will be due to the fact that the Specific Carbohydrate Diet is a restrictive diet by nature. Because many high-calorie foods and food groups are off limits, that reduction in calories will ultimately lead to at least some weight loss.*

Is The Specific Carbohydrate Diet Easy To Follow?

The Specific Carbohydrate Diet is not going to be an easy diet to follow. Because the diet is one that is ultra-restrictive and disallows many foods and certain food groups, that means cravings will likely be a daily occurrence. This can lead to the tendency to cheat on the diet, but doing so would hinder any weight loss progress that might have been enjoyed up to that point.

Also, there is no mention about exercise. While the way of eating on the Specific Carbohydrate Diet may be a healthier way to eat, it will only take a dieter so far without proper exercise; so, a newcomer to fitness might have trouble figuring out what types of exercise they should be doing.

Conclusion

The Specific Carbohydrate Diet is being used by many who are unfortunately afflicted with a number of illnesses, but that doesn’t mean it is the right way for you to diet. Only those with strong willpower will do well on the type of restrictive diet that the Specific Carbohydrate Diet puts you.

The books on the subject alone cost $60, and your food bill will increase, as much of the food is specialty food that will have to be bought at a specialty food store. For the average dieter, it is likely going to be easier and more cost effective to find a comprehensive program that will encompass both diet and exercise without leaving you feeling deprived of food and on your own to figure out fitness.
