The Stillman’s Diet, also known as “The Doctors Quick Weight Loss Diet,” was developed by Irwin Maxwell Stillman in 1967. It was one of the earliest known low-carb diets on the market during its time. Dr. Stillman worked primarily with overweight patients who desperately needed to lose weight quickly, and he found that weight would come off when carbohydrates were removed from the diet.* The diet program advocates six small meals a day, all containing lean meats, eggs, and cottage cheese. Because no vegetables are allowed on the diet, a daily multivitamin is encouraged to get you the proper vitamins and minerals you may be missing from vegetables.*

You are allowed to drink water, tea, and ironically, diet soda! (We now know the negative repercussions diet soda has on the body). Foods such as carbohydrates, vegetables, fruits, fats, sugars, and oils are all banned while following the Stillman’s Diet.* Stillman claimed that while on his diet, you could lose a generous amount of weight in the first week alone. This is a very serious claim to be making during the first week of any diet.*

The book sells for roughly $30.00 on Amazon, and has been around for quite some time. People claim that this diet was the rage back in 1960s and 70s, but does it stand the test of time?

Do Dieters Lose Weight On The Stillman’s Diet?

Because this diet forces the body into a ketogenic state where the body is burning fat rather that energy from carbohydrates, people have seen success. The fundamentals of the weight loss program cut out all starchy, sugary, and greasy foods, which essentially will cause weight gain if consumed. This is an elimination diet, so if you eliminate these foods from your diet, you will see your weight drop.* No exercise is encouraged during this diet, as the lack of calories you will be consuming may leave you low on energy. Customers have said that the program helped them lose a substantial amount of weight, and that the book was relatively easy to read. In today’s day and age, other low-carb diets have taken the spotlight from the Stillman’s Diet, making the name not recognizable to most. There have been many positive reviews when following Dr. Stillman’s program, but that doesn’t mean the program is easy to follow.

Is The Stillman’s Diet Easy To Follow?

Anytime you are eliminating large food groups from your diet, it is going to be extremely difficult at the beginning.* Cravings alone make people want to go crazy both mentally and physically. Because there are so many eliminations, this diet is not meant to be done long term, as the amount of nutrients from vital sources such as vegetables will eventually need to be added back into your diet. Some side effects from the diet have been malnutrition (lack of proper vitamins and minerals), constipation, low energy, irritability, and mood swings. It is always wise to consult a doctor about your overall health before going through an intense diet like the Stillman’s Diet. Overall, the book has been said to be an easy read, along with the diet plan being clear to readers. The actual implementation of the diet will be the hardest part, along with the cost of grocery shopping for the new food groups.

Conclusion

This old-time diet has seen success from many people, but it does show its age at the end of the day. It does not make a lot of sense to allow diet sodas and eliminate vegetables all together from someone’s diet. If anything, diet soda has become one of the main culprits for obesity in the United States because of the influx of artificial sweeteners. While the intentions are good and the main message makes sense, there are more up-to-date ways to lose weight. This diet is also not meant to be done long term, and it does not address ways for maintenance when returning back to “normal eating habits” once you are off the diet. All in all, the diet is rather dated, and the ideas of the book stand the test of time only to a point. With today’s knowledge about healthy fats, vegetables, and soda, there are better diets that are far more sophisticated to choose from.

  1. I went on this diet after giving birth in 1975. I lost about 10 pounds in less than 2 weeks. I was back to 124 pounds without pain whatsoever. You spoke about it being outdated, of course it is outdated, the book was written back in the 60′ or 70’s…. That is over 50 years ago. Diet soda was thought to be an excellent way to satisfy a sweet tooth without adding calories. Try reading the reviews of one of his books, that I just purchaced it for old times sake. Everyone raves about this book. I lost my copy and although I managed to maintain a fairly healthy diet since and stayed fairly slim but…most of us can stand to lose a few vanity pounds… I would not put this man… he was ahead of his time. He was a pioneer and was the first one to use high protein. All the others looked up to him and copied his way of dieting. We owe it all the Dr. Stillman, have some respect for one of the greatest….
