The Full Plate Diet is both a book and a website created by Stuart A. Steele, Teresa Sherard, and Diana Fleming back in 2010. The premise behind the book is to eat the foods your mom wants you to eat such as fruits, veggies, whole grains, peas, and beans. Wait, what about meat? The authors say meat is allowed, but in moderation compared to everything else you may consume. The company Full Plate Living created this book, and they are a non-profit organization seeking to encourage people to live healthier lifestyles and it starts with the food on their plate. When calling into their support line, the phone just rang and rang with an unprofessional answering message at the end. Not impressed, and they couldn’t even answer my call or return it for that matter.
Do Dieters Lose Weight On The Full Plate Diet?
Overall this book has been said to be a lot of pages and not a lot of useful information. Some even went as far to say this book could have been summed up in a pamphlet! The authors give the reader many tips on eating a lot of fiber in your diet, which can be good for some but not for others. When looking at authentic reviews done on this book, there were many people who said the portions were just not realistic for their everyday eating habits. There have been no terrible side effects noted, but there were many disappointed readers who felt like the information was pure common sense and a waste to spend their money on.
“This book is well presented and makes many good dietary recommendations regarding fiber. What the book fails to divulge on the cover or jacket liner is that this is a vegetarian diet.” Expresses Jim*. “The authors take a very dim view of eating meat of any type and take constant swipes at eating meat throughout the book.” He also went onto say that none of the food recommendations or recipes provided offered an “add meat” option. If you are leaning toward a vegan type lifestyle, you may enjoy this diet but it is most definitely not for everyone. Finally he ended with explaining that adding in more fiber to your diet is not the end all be all to your weight loss problems, and caloric reduction coupled with exercise is a must too.
Angela D. Douglas* thought that the book didn’t have enough material to be a full length read. “This book can be reduced to a pamphlet or brochure. A lot of fluff. Not to say that the information is not helpful, but an entire book was not needed. I'm very disappointed. It feels like a children's book” She then sums up the book like this, 1. Drink water 2. Don’t eat when you are not hungry 3. Increase your fiber up to 30 grams per day 4. Memorize the list of high fiber foods from the book. If you follow these steps, you will not need to purchase the book, or so Angela says.
“My problem with this book is two fold. The fiber grams can be way off (too generous) and the book absolutely should have included lists with fiber counts not just a few.” Modonna Wilkinson* also went onto share that she found a free fiber counter chart online and doesn’t even use the book anymore. She felt like the book worked to an extent, but that the program led too far on the vegetarian side of things. The overall vibe of the program was thought to be solid, and the message was to regain your health not get skinny quickly.
Conrad DuBois* said, “This book is about the fruits,grains,vegetables and nuts.The Full plate just rates each one from best for protein, carbs and other nutrients.” He then expressed frustration about the book not having any recipes, which made it less appealing to the reader.
Is The Full Plate Diet Easy To Follow?
While the book is said to have a lot of extra fluff, it also presents the basics in each chapter, which makes the read a somewhat easy one. The authors tell the reader why the foods are good for them, or at least why science says the foods are good for them in different studies presented in the book. You will be taken on a journey of food preparation to learning which nutritional foods to buy at the grocery store, but you will not be given any recipes to try out. This seems great, but a lot of the information you probably already know just from the internet itself, so this book is more of a guide than an actual diet. The one difficult part of this diet is the amount of fiber you should be eating on a daily basis, and the lack of meat you will be consuming. You are recommended to eat over 40 grams, which is a lot of fiber if you are not used to it!
The information in the book is helpful, but a lot of it is just extra talk that is needed to fill pages up. What most customers thought about the read, what that it was an easy read (almost like a children’s book) and that you just need to memorize what fibers to eat and you will be good to go. The book leans very much on the vegetarian side with many of the dishes, so if you like to eat meat this will be a letdown for you as well as a tough adjustment in your diet. Their social media accounts are up to date, and there is an adequate amount of followers, but hardly and participation with the folks who are following. Overall, The Full Plate Diet is a guide to taking meats out of your diet and putting more fiber in its place with little to no recipes on how to do so. This may be a difficult diet to follow in the long run, due to the lack of recipes and overdose of fiber.
