The Metabolic Typing Diet is a book written by William L. Wolcott and Trish Fahey, and it was published back in 2002. The authors were seeking to educate readers about their own individual metabolism, as it is a unique part of each person’s individual DNA makeup. Throughout the book he pushes the reader to find out what their “metabolic type” is so that they can start a diet program that will be conducive and effective with that specific type of metabolism. They provide self-sample tests that will uncover which type of diet will be the best for you in regards to losing weight and keeping it off long term. What works for your best friend may not work for you, which is why this book was created, as no diet is a one size fits all program.
When diving into further research about the actual authors and concept, they are seeking to find out which foods work well with your body chemistry, and what foods you should just stay away from. This all sounds great, but is it any different than the information we already know? There is no customer support number to call if you have any questions about this book.
The Three Types Of Diets:
- The Protein Type Diet– if you are given this diet to follow based on your metabolic type; it means that your body goes through carbohydrates like a freight train, and that the parasympathetic branch of your nervous system is stronger than your sympathetic. In laments terms this just means you oxidize your food rather fast, and need to consume red meats, dark meats and seafood.
- The Carbo Type Diet– If you are this type, you will need to consume more carbohydrates to strengthen your parasympathetic branch of your nervous system, because the sympathetic branch has taken over. In this case you are encouraged to go on a low-fat low protein diet and eat more fruits, veggies, and whole grains.
- The Mixed Type Diet- This is exactly how it sounds, where you will be eating a complete balanced diet of both carbohydrates, and proteins. By doing so, it will support both your parasympathetic branch as well as your sympathetic branch of your nervous system.
Do Dieters Lose Weight With The Metabolic Typing Diet?
The idea that a book can figure out exactly what your metabolic type is, and then create a magic program around that seems a little too good to be true. Many readers reported the foods they were not allowed to eat as “normal” for anyone trying to lose weight. The tests were not fully done in the book, causing the reader to have to find it online, as well as just a mishmash of information in total making it a confusing long read.
“I thought the idea of this book was great. It provides good justification on why people need to eat differently. It presents a good starting point to determine what type you are in metabolically.” Said VA* “The book fell apart for me in the follow through. I have no better understanding of exactly what I should be eating.” They then went onto say that the book needs to be re-written with a list of foods that should be avoided, as there is much confusion. Along with a list of foods that are not allowed, there should be a list of foods that are allowed to make the picture of the diet crystal clear for readers.
“Although the information contained is good, the test that is used to accurately assess someone's metabolic type is incomplete.” Expressed Miss Katelyn*. She then said she actually had to go online and search many databases to get the complete test. If she were to have written this book she would have included the full test.
Dimitrios Siountris* said, “The Metabolic Typing Diet asks some really relevant questions. For instance, why do some diets benefit some of us while harming others. And although Wolcott attempts to answer this question by using the metabolic typing diet, he finally fails to do so.” Dimitrios continued by explaining that the actual metabolic questionnaire provided in the book was meaningless, but that there many be some truth to metabolic typing. One big mistake he found was that Wolcott made a large mistake by placing fruits and vegetables in the same category. This proves that the information in this book is rather outdated and needs to be updated to current nutritional knowledge. Unlike other reviews, this reader thought the author did a good job telling the reader what food was healthful and what foods to avoid like the plague.
Is The Metabolic Typing Diet Easy To Follow?
This book has many people left skeptical after reading it, and figuring out their own personal metabolic type. First, it is not an easy read (very wordy), and second the tests are not backed by science in any way, shape, or form. The website that links to the book has not explanation on why these tests were said to be accurate, nor are there any visible studies done that readers can look into. Many people found that the “type” they were given actually made them feel worse when they were trying it out. This is not a book I would waste my time, energy, or money on.
The theory and idea behind the book seem incredible, and who wouldn’t want to know their exact metabolic type? The problem with the concept is how far fetched the tests are, and how shallow the results turn out to be. Many people were left feeling frustrated after going through the book, and test just to find out they need to eat a “balanced” diet. Everyone knows this when they are trying to diet, so why go through all of the pain to find that out once again? With no social media platforms for support, an old website that looks very outdated, as well as average customer testimonials this book is not going to hit it out of the park for dieters.
