Slimming World Diet Review

Margaret Miles Bramwell is the founder of the Slimming World diet, and she started it back in 1969 with only 200 pounds in her pocket. Originally, this diet program was only in the UK, but it has since found its way over to the United States. Slimming World USA and Slimming World UK are now what the programs are respectively called. At the first Slimming World meeting there were 55 women, and today in the UK there are over 7,300 groups that meet regularly in England and 16,000 worldwide. [1] The diet program is based off of getting together in groups and not taking away the foods you love, but instead optimizing them in a positive and healthy way. Success and weight loss is seen in the eyes of the dieter!

There are two different groups you can join depending on your availability: In person or online. They vary in price and accommodations; for example, in person will cost 4.95 pounds per week, whereas the online subscription will cost 60.00 pounds for three months. With in person you will get: A fully trained consultant, the company of slimmers to help motivate you, telephone support when needed, like minded members, a bumper book pack (getting started guide), Slimming World Magazine, online interactive tools, 1,400 searchable recipes, and weekly rates.

With online you will get: Like minded members, a bumper book pack (getting started guide), Slimming World Magazine if you upgrade to a Silver Subscription, online interactive tools, 1,400 searchable recipes, and a discounted fee of 60.00 pounds for three months. Not everyone will be able to meet in groups, so this is a nice option if you are good on the computer and comfortable not meeting in person. In the United States, the costs are a little different, so you will want to verify where you live to see those costs. For example, you can get started with an online community for $30.00 for three months, and then an additional $10.00 a month after that. You will get a live group consultant streaming once per week, support from other members, recipe access, approved food pocket guide, and an eating/activity tracking tool. [2]

Slimming World Claims

The return policy is rather simple, you have 14 days from your sign up date to see if you like the program or not. If you do not like the program, be sure to reach out to the company within 14 days of signing up. Also, your credit card will be on auto bill, so if after three months on the online subscription you do not want it anymore, you will have to contact the company so your credit card does not get billed each month after that. According to the company, you need to give them a 2 week heads up in order to cancel.

“If you want to cancel your membership, log into your account and click on the My Account link on the top right of the screen, then select the *Account Status* option. Alternatively, let us know by email: [email protected] (stating your full name, registered email address, and membership number).”

The company makes rather simple claims overall regarding their weight loss program.

They state,  “Success isn't achieved by setting impossible standards, or through humiliation, it's achieved through caring, compassion, and respect. You decide what size you want to be and we'll help you get there. At Slimming World we work together to help you look and feel great – body, mind and soul. There are now over 16,000 groups held weekly on a nationwide basis via a network of more than 4,500 Slimming World trained Consultants. We welcome 900,000 members to our group's weekly.” [4]

“In 2001, Slimming World pioneered NHS weight management referral schemes. Slimming World on Referral enables GPs to refer patients whose weight could be affecting their health to a local group for 12 weeks, free to the patient and subsidised by Slimming World. The scheme is now in operation in around 80 Local Authorities across England. Our research shows that referral members who attend at least 10 out of their 12 sessions lose more than 5% of their starting weight, at about half the cost of obesity drugs.”

This is what they claim you get when you sign up for Slimming World:

“An amazing no-hunger eating plan that you’ll love, Recipe and menu ideas for every occasion, Family friendly eating in and eating out ideas! Our fabulous lifestyle activity programme, Body Magic, Awards and celebrations for every achievement, Loads of help, encouragement and motivation when you need it most, and Slimming strategies that will help you lose weight beautifully and keep slim for life!” [4]

Lastly, they state the program will help with taking away the hunger pangs because no food is banned.

Never go hungry again! Our Free Food list includes masses of food that you can eat in unlimited amounts. Eat as much as you want, when you want! No food is banned! Enjoy your favorite treats every day and still lose weight. We'll support you every step of the way – in-group and online where our Consultants and your fellow members want you to succeed just as much as you do! You set your own target. You choose the weight you want to be and together we'll achieve it.” [4]

The Science (or Lack Thereof) Behind Slimming World

The main “science” behind this program is teamwork and accountability. They are not pushing some fancy diet supplement with ingredients proven to help you lose weight, and they are not giving you studies to back up their claims. Really, they offer some meal plans and support communities that will help you continue on your weight loss journey. The biggest part to this program are the support groups, as well as guidelines on how to optimize your food intake. There have been multiple studies done on the accountability factor, and how it breeds success both in working out and in weight loss situations.

A study done by the Department of Kinesiology at Indiana University proved that accountability really does pay off.

“They surveyed married couples who joined health clubs together and found that couples who worked out separately had a 43 percent dropout rate over the course of a year. Those who went to the gym together, regardless of whether they focused on the same type of exercise, had only a 6.3 percent dropout rate.” [5

In another study done by NCBI, they prove that weight loss is actually a very social endeavor, and without support it is much harder to achieve your goals. They tracked success through different worksites, which offered support to the dieters in the study.

They found,

“There were also significant improvements in cardiometabolic risk factors in intervention compared with control subjects regarding fasting total cholesterol, glucose, systolic blood pressure, and diastolic blood pressure. No significant weight regain was observed in participants who enrolled in the structured weight-maintenance program.” [6]

Word On The Street About Slimming World

When looking into Slimming World reviews there were not actual customer voices out there saying yes or no to this diet, but there were some opinions formed over Slimming World vs. Weight Watchers. Slimming World seemed more popular to the people who left their comments and stories. [7] The thing about Slimming World people liked was the food optimization factor.

There are a few steps when you start the program:

  1. Choose your free foods such as fresh fruit and vegetables along with lean meat. Rice pasta, and potatoes are also on this list along with eggs. There are three different categories of free foods to choose from: The Extra Easy Choice, Green Day, or Red Day (the original choice).
  2. You then can choose from Healthy Extras to add to your meals, and this really depends on which plan you are following that day or week. The Extra Easy Choice, Green Day, and Red Day all have different healthy extras.
  3. Lastly, you can choose your Syns (treats). One Syn is equivalent to 20 calories, and you are guided as to how many of those you can consume. You are given instructions on what foods are available when you join the program. [8]

The Bottom Line: Is Slimming World Worth A Try?

Yes.  There are no large red flags within this diet program, and many people like to be social with their weight loss. It is not terribly expensive, and it does not include any supplements that might be harmful in any way. You will cook recipes on your own, activity is promoted, and you might even make some free friends in the process. With over 1,600 Slimming World recipes to look into, you won’t question what to eat, and you might even really enjoy some of the recipes. The online model is nice for the person who is somewhat shy, and the in person model works for the social butterfly. No matter which platform you use, there will be support involved throughout your journey.
